VW group 7-speed DSG DQ200 (0AM / 0CW / 0BM, dry clutches): reported mechatronic and clutch faults

In 2013 Volkswagen announced a gearbox oil and software measure for DQ200 units (about 1.8 million vehicles worldwide according to L'argus); in Germany and France it was carried out at workshop visits rather than as a recall. Regulators also recorded recalls for a possible loss of drive (NHTSA 13V568 and 19V866, US Jetta Hybrid only; Hong Kong 10000424, where the notice says it happens only in isolated cases). Recalls and trade-press reports describe faults of the mechatronic unit; workshop sources also describe clutch wear. The 7-speed dry-clutch DSG is used with engines up to about 250 Nm.

Read this firstEach entry describes a known weak point of a model, engine or gearbox, based on published sources. It is not a statement about any individual car and not a diagnosis. An entry does not mean that a given car has the defect; the absence of an entry does not mean that a car is sound. Prevalence figures are estimates for the stated population and method, with their biases, and cannot be applied to a single car. The data is provided as is, without warranty (CC-BY-4.0, section 5); it is not a certified, mechanical or legal inspection. Naming a manufacturer or its product is not an assessment of that manufacturer; source links show where each fact comes from. To report an error, open an issue at github.com/ElgardeCom/elgarde or write to support@elgarde.com. We correct mistakes.

Which cars this covers

Only cars with the 7-speed DSG with dry clutches (DQ200, gearbox codes 0AM / 0CW / 0BM). Not applicable to manual gearboxes or to wet-clutch DSGs (DQ250 / 02E, DQ381, DQ500).

Models in scope
Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Caddy, Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Scirocco, Volkswagen Touran, Audi A1, Audi A3, SEAT Ibiza, SEAT Leon, Škoda Fabia, Škoda Octavia
Conditions on top of the model
  • Gearbox: family DQ200; code 0AM, 0CW, 0BM
Notes on scope
The gearbox codes come from secondary sources (0CW is described as a revised version from 2013; 0BM is the code used on some Audi models). Campaign build windows differ by market, for example Germany 2008 to May 2011 and October 2012 to April 2013. A 2019 Australian accumulator recall is not included because its notice does not name the gearbox type.

How to check whether a particular car is affected

Elgarde reads the conditions above and gives one of three answers for a car:

  • Applies: every condition is confirmed for the car.
  • Possible: at least one condition cannot be confirmed yet. The entry stays on the checklist, with a note on what to find out.
  • Not applicable: a condition is clearly not met (for example a manual gearbox on a DSG entry). The entry is left off the checklist.

What to look for, and where

  • Model: one of the models listed above
The model name as on the registration document, e.g. Golf, 208, 320d.
  • Gearbox type
Manual or automatic? On VW group cars a dual-clutch gearbox usually shows 'DSG' or 'S tronic' on or near the gear lever.
  • Gearbox code: family DQ200; code 0AM, 0CW, 0BM
Stamped on the gearbox housing and returned by a dealer VIN query; on VW group cars also printed on the vehicle data sticker.

When in doubt, treat the car as possible: asking one question too many costs less than missing a defect.

How the fault arises, as reported

The mechatronic unit combines the hydraulic pressure accumulator, an electric pump and the control electronics. Recalls and the trade press describe: additives in the original synthetic gearbox oil that could corrode the electronics (addressed in 2013 with mineral oil and new software); cracks in the accumulator or housing that let hydraulic pressure drop so the clutches may not engage; and wear of the dry clutches reported by workshops. Reported results include judder and gears not engaging and, in the recalls, a possible sudden loss of drive; the Hong Kong notice says the latter occurs only in isolated cases.

Reported symptoms

Early signs

  • Judder or shudder when pulling away
  • Clunk or rattle at standstill or on load change

Later signs

  • Gear not engaging, or sudden loss of drive
  • Gearbox warning light or flashing gear indicator

What to check when inspecting a car

  • Documents and records. Confirm the gearbox is a DQ200: read the code (0AM / 0CW / 0BM) on the gearbox housing or from a dealer VIN query. Wet-clutch DSGs (DQ250, DQ381, DQ500) are different units.
  • Documents and records. Check recall and campaign status by VIN and ask whether the 2013 oil and software measure was done.Red flag: Open campaign, or no record on a car built 2008–2013.
  • Diagnostic read-out. Read the gearbox fault memory (P17BF, P189C, P1895) and, with a suitable tester, hydraulic pressure build-up and clutch adaptation values.
Tools: ODIS, VCDSRed flag: Pressure-loss or clutch fault codes: price in a mechatronic or clutch repair.
  • Test drive. Test drive in stop-and-go traffic and pull away on a slope: feel for judder, clunks, hesitation, gears not engaging or a flashing gear indicator.Red flag: Any judder or delayed engagement.

Repair and cost

Usual remedy
Depending on the fault: mechatronic replacement (the remedy in the Hong Kong recall) or repair kit (US recall 19V866), clutch replacement, then software update and adaptation.
No published repair cost is recorded in this dossier.

What the manufacturer and regulators have said

Manufacturer programme

In November 2013 Volkswagen announced a change from synthetic to mineral gearbox oil for DQ200 units, with a software update (about 257,000 cars in Germany; about 1.8 million worldwide according to L'argus); in Germany and France this was done at workshop visits, not as an official recall. In Russia, Volkswagen offered a 5-year / 150,000 km DSG warranty from summer 2012, not applied to cars built from 1 January 2014. Sources: [5], [6], [7]

Applies only to the listed VINs; the notice says the power interruption occurs only in isolated cases and that steering and braking are not affected. [3] td.gov.hk

A recall or campaign record describes the vehicles in its scope, not a confirmed failure in any given car.

How common is it?

No reliable figure

No reliable figure for how many cars are affected is recorded for this entry. This is stated on purpose: a missing number is not a low number.

No published figure gives the share of DQ200 gearboxes with mechatronic or clutch failure. Recall and service-measure populations count vehicles in scope, not failures.
