What commonly goes wrong on a used European car?

25 documented weak points across 8 brand families, 3 of them serious enough to walk away from. Each one is a specific component with a specific failure — the DQ200 dry clutch, the PureTech wet timing belt, the N47 timing chain — not a general warning to “check the engine”.

This is the same curated list the Elgarde app adds to your checklist once it knows the make and model, and the same data the free API serves. Below it is grouped by brand family, with the models each entry applies to.

A critical entry is one that caps the whole inspection verdict: score it 2 or below in the app and the car comes out a 1 regardless of how well everything else scores.

How to use this before you buy

Read the entries for the brand you are looking at, then walk the car with the full checklist — 28 items for a typical diesel, of which 8 are critical. The app adds the model's weak points to that checklist automatically once you enter the VIN or the make and model.

Where this comes from

Hand-curated for common European used models, published as open data under CC-BY-4.0 in the inspection canon, canon version 2. Corrections and additions are welcome — the list grows by being wrong in public rather than by being vague.

What this list is not

These are known weak points on a model — things worth checking — never a claim about any individual car. A model appearing here does not make it a bad car, and a model missing from the list is not endorsed: it only means nothing is curated for it yet. Elgarde is a self-service checklist, not a certified, mechanical or legal inspection. The full limits are in the inspection disclaimer.

Read this firstEach entry describes a known weak point of a model, engine or gearbox, based on published sources. It is not a statement about any individual car and not a diagnosis. An entry does not mean that a given car has the defect; the absence of an entry does not mean that a car is sound. Prevalence figures are estimates for the stated population and method, with their biases, and cannot be applied to a single car. The data is provided as is, without warranty (CC-BY-4.0, section 5); it is not a certified, mechanical or legal inspection. Naming a manufacturer or its product is not an assessment of that manufacturer; source links show where each fact comes from.
